Incredible talent should not go unnoticed. 17-year-old singer-songwriter Jacob Whitesides recently released his official second extended play, A Piece Of Me, on Valentine's Day and the six-track effort is a promising start for the young artist's future career.
As he prepares for a small solo tour, as well as a supporting gig with Fifth Harmony on their upcoming tour, Whitesides proves that hard work and life experiences can showcase an immense amount of maturity at such a young age. So far, the artist has garnered millions of views on YouTube for his original recordings and intriguing covers and amassed over 1.4 million Twitter followers with his personal lyrics, acoustic guitar and fresh pop ballad sound.
A Piece Of Me, a follow up to his "You're Perfect" single, is Whitesides first project of completely original material. With heartfelt, personal tracks including "Billboard (If I'm Honest)" and "Ohio", the artist is allowing his devoted fans to take a quick peek into his life. He may have only made it past the first round of The X Factor auditions, but the setback has not slowed down Whitesides from releasing a solid collection of songs.
"Billboard (If I'm Honest)" is the upbeat, opening track on the new EP and immediately highlights the John Mayer inspirations Whitesides has discussed on multiple occasions. The artist sings of a love that is not returned by the person who currently has his heart. There's no loud production, just a boy and his guitar, expressing his feelings. "I'm like a billboard in the sky, how many time you've passed me by," he sings on the future contemporary hit.
The experience of growing up without a father influenced the recording of "Ohio", a song that will become an escape for any young listener. Whitesides sings that he doesn't need Hollywood, or the lights of Las Vegas, he simply prefers the open field of The Buckeye State. It's another acoustic performance that holds a deeper meaning for the artist than what may be conveyed on the song's surface.
Whitesides wants to tell his other half they are beautiful in a way they have never heard before on "Words", a track which preceded the release of the EP. "If only I could speak aloud, just what I feel when you're around, I finally confess my love in verse, but I'm not good with words," the artist beautifully sings as he sums up what many people feel when they get that tingling feeling in the heart. It's a simple sweet addition.
Other tracks featured on the EP, "Not My Type At All", "Let's Be Birds" and "Rumors", are all equally strong, and prove that this is not the last time we hear from the talented Whitesides. Wishing him success on his future endeavors.
