My New Obsession With... Foxes!

 * Shout out to my friend, Andre Lozano, for introducing me to an amazing new talent.

I will be the first to admit I do not know much about my newest obsession, although I do recall her name recently being attached to a track featured on Lady Gaga-producer Zedd's debut album, Clarity. Foxes, a London-born beauty, caught my attention after one listen to the title track off the July release of Warrior, her debut EP. While what I heard would not necessarily be classified as pop, more of a synth-pop vibe to me, her vocals come off dark and innocent at the same time, a quality found recently in Lana del Rey and Ellie Goulding, when Goulding isn't screwing it up by releasing heavily produced trash. Foxes, real name: Louisa Rose Allen, is only 22, but has already released beautiful material that could rival the older, title-worthy divas of our time. I'm not saying that Foxes gives of a diva-ish air, but I do believe she has the abilities to take her career far, no matter what path she decides to travel down once her official full length debut album hits the shelves sometime in 2013.

The song that won me over instantly, "Warrior", is the perfect piece of strength and courage. Foxes takes the lyrics and commands them with a shout-to-the-sky type performance. "If you can make it, then the sun will rise," she sings of the need for perseverance, the true definition of a warrior. The track starts off with a mellow, tranquil tone, talking about the monsters hiding under your bed slowly creeping into your head. Everybody needs some light in their life and the singer gives her best to make sure her listeners experience that warm feeling every once in a while. Not to sound too soppy, but the words pouring out of Foxes' mouth pumped me up. They will certainly allow someone to look at the brighter side of a terrible day. The song features amazing songwriting, great, drum-heavy production, and vocals that needs to be blasting out of every speaker.

What I believe is her most recent effort, "Echo" still showcases the aspect of the Foxes that makes her a unique artist while featuring a hook I automatically compared to "Heads Will Roll" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I say that in terms of progression and structure, the two sound almost identical. The track describes a crumbling relationship, taking it to the point where one will only hear their own echo instead of their lover's voice in return. Foxes hits some notes towards the end of the song that are truly remarkable while, as a whole, the track sheds light on a darker subject matter. You can hear the hurt and disappointment in the artist's voice, a quality I feel makes the song more believable. I enjoy the song, the video is a pleasant watch also, but I do not know how well it will catch on as her first single release.

Other songs from Foxes, "Youth" and "Home", were featured on episodes of Gossip Girl and it was "Youth" that lead Zedd to feature the young artist on his album. The album's title track is sort of a departure from Foxes' sound. The song shows the singer hitter higher notes in front of a hard, electronic beat, clearly more of a hardcore pop/dance vibe. It just shows that Foxes can pretty much perform anything. It is called range. True artists are capable of it.

After discovering Foxes, in my opinion about five months too late, I have constantly been replaying the tracks mentioned above. The EP was a strong release, the new single is a good listen, and could only signal the fact that many good things are about to come her way. She has won me over, I am now a devoted fan. Now, others need to get on the bandwagon and take a chance on the young girl with the powerful and convincing performances. Another day, another obsession.
