Following his personal, urban contemporary-influenced debut single "Stable Ground", and its equally impressive supreme remix featuring incredible rap verses from LastO and DDM, pop/R&B artist Wilson Knight has thankfully returned with another addictive release. With no featured guest this time around, Knight goes solo on "Fernando", a smooth, slightly more radio-friendly, cut which cleverly uses the love for a cinnamon-colored vehicle as an underlying metaphor for a raunchy time in the bedroom. Didn't think we'd catch that now did you Mr. Wilson?
Written by Solomon, the man behind SolRay Records, the new single is an immediate departure from the artist's past creation. Within the first few seconds, the deep voiced intro of "posted on the block, baby drop ya top", it is evident that "Fernando" (unfortunately not a sequel to Lady Gaga's "Alejandro) leans more towards the hip-hop genre with only a slight taste of pop production. Knight's vocals sound controlled, the chorus is a real delight and it is nice to hear the artist have fun with his darker side. Once again, the single is an intriguing effort which does its best at setting itself apart from the current Top 40 trend. Success.
While "Stable Ground" dealt with the messy issues of a crumbling relationship, "Fernando" seems to deliciously detail the fun, first few dates of intimacy. Knight gets pretty naughty on the track, but tries to innocently cover up his bedroom adventures with lines describing his man's Bugatti. Apparently he has been taking the advice of the legendary Miss Spears. Work bitch! "Rev it up, make that engine purr, no caution signs, so we drift the curve," the artist sings on the bridge. It is in fact the bridge that becomes the true highlight of the new single, the loud production comes to a quiet roar and Knight just gives it all he has with his seductive vocals.
The track is not absolutely perfect, I did have a small problem with the delivery on the verses, but overall "Fernando" is an infectious creation with the potential to effortlessly cross genre boundaries. It's a little R&B, it has some hip-hop flavor and I can taste the delicate pop beats. It works for this music lover. Knight and Solomon have created a single that listeners can blast carelessly in the car or play when they are getting hot and heavy with their significant other. Be sure to buckle up though! With only two official tracks under his belt, the artist sure knows how to create positive buzz around a possible full length debut. Time to go out and find my Fernando!
